  विष्णुपदी सुरसरिता गंगामाता नर्मदामातेची स्तुति स्कंदपुराणात करते. गंगादि सर्व नद्या सुद्धा नर्मदेमध्ये आपल्या सर्व शक्तींच्यासह निवास करीत असतात. म्हणूनच नर्मदा हि केवळ अन्य नद्यांच्याप्रमाणं एक नदी नसून साक्षात् शिवापासून उद्भूत झालेली शिवस्वरूप देवी आहे. पृथ्वीवरील यच्चयावत प्राणीमात्रांच्या पापांच्या नाशासाठी व त्यांचं कल्याण करवून देण्यासाठीच ती पृथ्वीवर अवतीर्ण झालेली मोक्षदायिनी माता आहे.

  अशा या भवतारिणी नर्मदामातेची परिक्रमा याचा अर्थ पर्यटन किंवा सहल नव्हे, तर परिक्रमा म्हणजे नर्मदेभोवती अत्यंत श्रध्देनं, ह्रदयामध्ये वैराग्य धारण करून, भक्तीनं लीन होऊन संसारदुःखातून सुटण्यासाठी अथवा मोक्षाच्या तीव्र इच्छेनं केलेली फार मोठी साधना व तपश्चर्या आहे. अशा या नर्मदापरीक्रमेचं माहात्म्य, या ग्रंथामध्ये सर्व पुराणांच्या आधारे विषद केलं आहे.

  नर्मदेच्या तीरावर कोणकोणती तीर्थं आहेत? तिथं कोणकोणत्या महापुरुषांनी, ऋषीमुनींनी तपस्या केल्या आहेत? त्यामागील इतिहास काय आहे? त्यांचा प्रभाव काय आहे? त्याठिकाणी शास्त्रशुद्ध पद्धतीनं आपण कोणत्या साधना कराव्यात? कोणती अनुष्ठानं करावीत? कोणती धर्मकर्मं करावीत? त्यांचं फळ काय आहे? तसंच मनुष्यजन्मात बाल्यावस्थेपासून तर वृद्धावस्थेपर्यंत आपल्या हातून कळत-नकळत शरीरानं, मनानं, स्वेच्छेनं-अनिच्छेनं, जी काही पापकर्म घडलेली असतात, त्यांचं क्षालन करण्यासाठी काय करावं? पूर्वी ऐतिहासिक काळात या सर्व गोष्टींचा अनुभव कोणी कोणी घेतला? कोणकोणत्या देवतेनं इथं तपस्या केली आहे? आणि त्याचं प्रमाण काय आहे? नर्मदेच्या तीरावर कोणी कोणी तीर्थं स्थापन केली आहेत? नर्मदेच्या तीरावर तीर्थाटन, परिक्रमा कशी करावी? त्याचे नियम काय आहेत? परिक्रमा कोण करू शकतो आणि कोण करू शकत नाही? या सर्व प्रश्नांची उत्तरं या ग्रंथात दिलेली आहेत.

  या सर्वांचं समग्र वर्णन या ग्रंथात आलेलं आहे. म्हणून हा ग्रंथ म्हणजे व्यक्तिगत केलेल्या परिक्रमेचं प्रवासवर्णन नाही. परमपूज्य माताजी स्वामी स्थिताप्रज्ञानंद सरस्वती यांनी हा ग्रंथ एका आगळ्या-वेगळ्या शैलीमध्ये, ओघवत्या भाषेत, वैशिष्ठ्यपूर्ण पद्धतीने लिहीला आहे. साधना हा अध्यात्माचा प्राण आहे. साधना, तपश्चर्या हेच या ग्रंथाचंही सार आहे. साधकांना, भक्तांना,नर्मदापुत्र असणाऱ्या परिक्रमावासियांना हा ग्रंथ नक्कीच उपयुक्त ठरेल, असा विश्वास आहे.
