In the text Yogavasistha, in all its chapters and verses, Sage Vasistha Muni constantly declares that this entire visible world — objects, experiences, dealings, people, all relationships — indeed this whole worldly existence — is extremely illusory and imaginary. Due to ignorance of our true nature (Self), our mind gives reality to all of this and thereby suffers sorrow.
In this section on peace of the mind, many methods are described for calming the mind. The mind that gives reality to this world is itself fundamentally unreal. In truth, the mind has no real existence. “I” am not the mind; rather, I am entirely distinct from the mind — I am of the nature of pure consciousness, of the nature of the Supreme Reality (Brahman).
When firm conviction arises through the knowledge of one’s true nature, the mind automatically becomes quiet. That itself is the complete realization of the Self — the state of eternal bliss and peace. That indeed is the supreme state of tranquility (Upashama).
